Ooks — Terms of Service
1. About these terms
Ooks is a spelling- and dictation-practice app for Singapore primary-school children (English and Chinese). A guardian photographs a weekly spelling list, the app extracts the words, and the child studies them with a spaced-repetition scheduler that aims for strong recall by the test date.
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and the provider of Ooks ("Ooks", "we", "us"), based in Singapore. They govern your use of the Ooks apps, website, and related services (together, the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
These Terms work together with our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal data.
2. Who may use Ooks
- You must be at least 18 years old and able to enter into a binding contract to create a guardian account.
- Ooks is intended to be used by children under the direction of a guardian. The guardian creates and controls each child's profile.
- By creating a child profile, you confirm that you are the parent or legal guardian of that child and that you consent, on the child's behalf, to the child's use of the Service and to the data handling described in our Privacy Policy.
- You are responsible for supervising your child's use of the Service.
3. Accounts and security
- A guardian account is created with an email address and password. A child account is created by the guardian and signs in with a username and password only — never a real email address or phone number.
- You are responsible for keeping account credentials confidential and for all activity under your account and your children's profiles.
- Please give us accurate information and keep it up to date.
- Tell us promptly at privacy@ooks.ai if you believe an account has been used without authorisation.
4. Your content
"Your Content" means the material you add to the Service — including spelling-list photos, deck names, words, definitions, example sentences, and study answers.
- You keep ownership of Your Content.
- You grant us a limited licence to host, store, process, and display Your Content solely to operate the Service for you — for example, to extract words from a photo, schedule reviews, generate audio, and sync across your devices. We do not use Your Content for advertising and we do not sell it.
- You are responsible for Your Content. You confirm you have the right to upload it and that doing so does not break the law or infringe anyone's rights. Spelling lists are for your family's personal study use; do not upload material you are not permitted to copy or use.
- You must not upload content that is unlawful, harmful, hateful, sexually explicit, or otherwise inappropriate for a children's education service.
5. Sharing word lists
Ooks lets you share a word list by a short code so classmates can study the same words. If you choose to share a deck:
- Only the words and study content are shared — never the photo, and never any child or guardian name, email, or study progress. (See the Privacy Policy for detail.)
- By sharing, you grant other families a licence to use the shared word content within the Service for their own study.
- Sharing is your choice; you can keep a deck private or stop sharing at any time. Content you shared may remain available to families who already have the code.
- Only share content you have the right to share, and that is appropriate for children.
6. Automatic word extraction (AI)
Ooks uses an AI vision service to read your spelling-list photo and turn it into study cards. This is a convenience feature and may contain errors — misread words, wrong segmentation, or missed items. Always check the extracted words against your original list before your child relies on them. The Service is a study aid and does not guarantee any particular test result or learning outcome.
7. Acceptable use
When using the Service, you agree not to:
- break any law, or infringe intellectual-property or privacy rights;
- upload malware, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other accounts, or our systems;
- probe, scan, overload, or disrupt the Service, or bypass rate limits or security measures;
- reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code, except to the extent the law allows;
- scrape or harvest data, or use the Service to build a competing product;
- resell, sublicense, or commercially exploit the Service without our written permission.
8. Our intellectual property
The Service itself — the apps, website, design, software, and the Ooks name and logo — belongs to us and our licensors. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service for your family's own study, subject to these Terms. Nothing here transfers our rights to you.
9. Price and paid features
The Service is currently offered free of charge. We may introduce paid features or subscriptions in the future. If we do, we will give notice and clear pricing before any charge applies, and any purchase will be subject to the terms and billing rules of the relevant app store. We may change or discontinue features over time.
10. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and why, how we protect children's data, and the third parties who process data for us. By using the Service you acknowledge that policy. You can delete a card, a deck, a child profile, or your entire account at any time — see how to delete your account and data.
11. Service availability
Ooks works offline for study, and syncs to the cloud when connected. We aim to keep the Service running well but we do not promise it will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free, and we may perform maintenance or update features. We are not responsible for your device, internet connection, or app-store availability.
12. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. Ooks is an educational study aid; you remain responsible for supervising your child's learning and for verifying study content.
13. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the Service. Nothing in these Terms limits any liability that cannot be limited under Singapore law. Where our liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the claim (which, while the Service is free, may be nil).
14. Suspension and termination
- You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from within the app or via the account-deletion page.
- We may suspend or terminate access if you breach these Terms, misuse the Service, or where necessary to protect users or comply with the law.
- On account deletion, your data is handled as described in the Privacy Policy (a hard delete completed within 24 hours). Shared word lists you contributed may remain, as they contain no personal data.
15. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as the Service evolves. We will post the new version here and update the "Last updated" date; significant changes will be notified in-app. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
16. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Singapore, and the courts of Singapore have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute, without affecting any mandatory consumer-protection rights you may have where you live.
